Looking for a good overnight

I live on Long Island and my friend and I are looking to go on a overnight backpacking trip this month. So what I'm asking is if anyone knows a good place to hike in up to 6 miles and have a place to camp. Id prefer legally. Also if like to keep it within 2 hours drive of NYC

Overlook mountain near Woodstock is 2.5 miles to the fire tower. Before the fire tower is a side trail going to echo lake shelter which is about 1.75 miles from the intersection. I have not hiked that spur recently, but have staying at the echo lake shelter on my bucket list
