For years CalTopo has been an excellent online resource for viewing and printing USGS topo maps and for planning backpacking trips and routes, and a few years ago they released their own mapping app as well. The CalTopo App is a mapping app that’s a free download, and allows you to view USGS topo maps on your phone, add layers like slope angle shading, shaded relief, satellite views, and even more like weather forecasts and snow data. With this much data in the palm of your hand, the app presents itself as a powerful tool for planning trips at home and for wilderness navigation alike...
