For any hiker or backpacker that embarks on winter trips or keeps their hiking routine up no matter the weather, a good pair of gaiters are essentially a required item for keeping snow and ice out of your footwear and subsequently keeping your feet as dry as possible in frigid conditions. Gaiters also add warmth, and for 3-season hiking are optional items that can help keep debris out of your shoes and assist in keeping your feet dry if you opt for waterproof footwear.
