There is no shortage of acronyms when it comes to government agencies and this is certainly true when it comes to the agencies that manage our public lands. The history and boundaries, not to mention the funding and hierarchies, of the various land management agencies in the United States are fairly complex. However, not everyone you might meet working on public lands is a ranger, and not all public lands will be parks. While it might seem nitpicky to focus on these casual designations, it is important that as users of public lands we recognize the differences in management of the areas we visit. This allows us to not only abide by the appropriate regulations but also understand and advocate for increased funding or offer informed commentary during opportunities for public input...
