I'm a relatively 'new' hiker in the US, as I've only really started doing a lot of hiking this year.

I live in Houston, so far have done most of my hiking in Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Oklahoma, and of course out in West Texas. 

The Gulf Coast is about the worst part of the country to live for hiking purposes so it always becomes about a long drive to go to where the mountains are
