Regardless of which specific bag or quilt you buy (bought) and pad(s) you use, I suggest always carrying a $1 foil 'emergency' blanket.   They make a great vapor-barrier liner for the surprise too-cold night, tarp for the ground, etc.... and are re-usable enough for most 3-4 day trips.
