My Osprey Ariel 65 pack has been sitting in storage for a few years (marriage and then kids...you know).  When I opened the container, I realized that some critter had gotten in and had a party.  My pack is fine, but smells HORRIBLE.  Is there any hope for cleaning it and getting rid of the smell?  Any tips?  I am really bummed!!

I'd remove the aluminum stays, if possible, and soak it in a bathtub or big sink with laundry detergent for an hour or so, rinse it 3 times and hang it in the sun. Repeat if necessary. Shouldn't be a fatal situation.

I've had good success with Dr. Bronner's soap when it comes to cleaning outdoor gear and think I might give that a go in your situation - maybe adding some vinegar to the equation considering the circumstance. A thorough wash, rinse, and some dry time in the sun and hopefully the pack will be ready to hit the trail. Some additional info can be found in this recent article as well. :)
