Newbie, camping clothes

You'll probably never hike in a down jacket unless you are caught in a blizzard. The Icebreaker & fleece would be good for backpacking at 30 degrees - above 45 degrees you can take off the fleece if you are moving.

I usually wear a base-base layer of an Icebreaker short sleeve t-shirt, Icebreaker long sleeve over that, fleece, light rain jacket with pit zips and I'm ready to climb Mt. Shasta on a 20 degree morning. Put on down when I'm not moving.

I have some Wrangler long sleeve shirts from WalMart that are good light outer layers over a t-shirt when it's cool and good sun protection in the afternoon. I wear a light long-sleeve collared shirt made of cotton on sunny afternoons in the mountains (cotton doesn't kill - it's not my outer layer if it starts raining). I also have one that's a cotton-poly blend that's made for outdoors and doesn't looks so dirt bag as the wrinkled sweaty cotton.

When backpacking, do i need 2 Icebreakers, one for the day and another "fresh" one to sleep?

Some people like a change of clothes of some sort. I just sleep in the same stuff I hike in except for socks and always have a clean pair at the ready there.

Use what you already have. Just avoid cotton. A few articles is all most people need especially for the warm half of the year. It is interesting that anyone would think Georgia and California are cold places.
